Housing

Family conflict is the most common reason LGBTQ+ youth lose stable housing. If home is not safe right now, these places can help.

How housing problems start

No two stories are the same, but there are common paths. Family conflict, very often because a family member does not accept a young person's gender identity or sexual orientation, is the main reason LGBTQ+ youth lose stable housing.

LGBTQ+ people also face high rates of domestic and sexual violence, so many youth end up on the streets after leaving dangerous situations at home, in shelters, or in foster care.

Short-term care at the Family Resources safe space in Bradenton is an important step toward safety, self-worth, and a better quality of life for youth who are unhoused or have run away.

About Family Resources and SafePlace2B

Family Resources runs safe, clean youth shelters in Pinellas and Manatee counties. They give short-term residential care and counseling: a safe place for youth who are unhoused or have run away, and a break and support for families in crisis. Follow-up counseling and help finding a stable place to live come after.

Their shelters and counseling are open to every young person, whatever their gender, orientation, or background. Youth dealing with family conflict, running away, being unhoused, school problems, or a crisis that calls for a break are all welcome.

While at SafePlace2B, youth get

  • Individual and group counseling
  • Life skills
  • Education
  • Recreational activities
  • Family counseling during the stay, which can continue at the Family Counseling office afterward

Services are planned for each young person. Over a few days to a few weeks, most families come back together with a new way of looking at conflict and a plan to avoid the problems that lead to running away or acting out.

SafePlace2B is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week, in three places: Clearwater, St. Petersburg, and Bradenton.
