Conversations

Talking with your child

There is no script, and you do not need all the answers. A few things many families find helpful:

  • Listen first. Let them tell their story at their own pace.
  • Thank them for trusting you. It took courage to share.
  • Use the name and pronouns they ask for, and ask if you are unsure.
  • Ask who else knows, so you do not share before they are ready.
  • It is okay to say “I am still learning.” Keep the door open for the next conversation.

You do not have to do this alone. The parents group and free family counseling are here for you.
