ALSO Youth Prom: A Night of Fun, Dancing, and Inclusion
Sarasota OUT ·
On February 18th, 2023, ALSO Youth held its annual Prom at the Sarasota Municipal Auditorium, and it was a night to remember.
Almost 200 young people came to the 2023 ALSO Youth Prom, and the theme was disco. Between dancing, there were crafts and contests, all made possible by the prom planning committee, volunteers, and sponsors. Most of all, it was a night for LGBTQ+ youth in Sarasota and Manatee Counties to celebrate who they are somewhere safe.
Before the big night, a free prom closet offered jackets, dresses, and shoes, and a prom salon helped youth look and feel their best. While the youth danced, ALSO Youth and PFLAG hosted parents and guardians at our Sarasota Center half a mile away, so they could meet each other and find resources. One volunteer said that some of the older guests “shed tears of joy” watching the youth dress, laugh, and dance safely.
