ALSO Youth Announces the Hon. Rick De Furia Enrichment Scholarship to Honor a Legacy of Investing in Young People
EIN Presswire ·

ALSO Youth created a new annual scholarship in memory of Judge Rick De Furia. Each year, one LGBTQ+ young person, ages 10 to 24, receives up to $1,500 to pursue learning beyond the classroom, such as music lessons, art classes, a certification, or career exploration. Applications opened September 12, 2026.
ALSO Youth announced the scholarship on September 10, 2026, to honor the late Circuit Court Judge Frederick “Rick” De Furia. Unlike a tuition award, it pays for learning outside the classroom, like creative writing workshops, music lessons, leadership development, or a professional certification, so a young person can build confidence and find new passions. Applications opened on September 12, the anniversary of his passing, and the award was made possible by an anonymous gift.
To apply, a young person must be LGBTQ+, between 10 and 24, live in Sarasota or Manatee County, take part in ALSO Youth programs regularly, and face a money barrier to the opportunity they have in mind. They share a personal statement, the expected cost, and a reference. “Judge De Furia believed in people,” said Executive Director Annie Berkness.
