Under a newly signed bill, parents would be notified anytime a student asks to be called by a pronoun that differs from their birth sex.

When Governor Ron DeSantis signed the Parental Rights in Education bill in March 2022, a law critics called “Don’t Say Gay,” FOX 13 looked at what it meant for Sarasota County. Since 2018, school guidelines there had let students go by their chosen pronouns without notifying parents. Under the new law, parents would be told anytime a student wants to be called by a pronoun that differs from their birth sex, and lessons on sexual orientation and gender identity would be banned in kindergarten through third grade.

Speaking for ALSO Youth, Christine Grossman reminded viewers that not every parent is ready to support a child who is LGBTQ+. The Sarasota County School Board said it was reviewing its guidelines, and the law was set to take effect the next school year.
